I'll have plenty of commentary for the show, but here are a couple scraps of evidence without commentary (though emphasis was added), the first from the Supreme Court, the other two from the official income tax regulations from 1956.

Consider how many of the things we now accept as self-evident were the "rantings of madmen" of yesteryear. The earth is spherical, not flat. It goes around the sun, not vice versa. (Remember, only a few hundred years ago people were imprisoned, tortured, and murdered for saying that.) Flying machines are possible. Things too small to see make us sick. "Heat" is a property of substances, not a separate substance. And so on, and so on.
Human progress would happen a lot faster if people gave more weight to evidence and logic than they do to rumor and popular opinion. The same is true when it comes to the federal income tax.
