Congratulations to guest Dr. Darden North from Jackson, Mississippi – winner of the Coveted Golden Grog Award on the May 26th edition of The SoapBox Radio Show. Dr. North debated Diane Archer from the Campaign for America’s Future over the issue of how to best improve health care in America. Ms. Archer pointed to health insurance companies as being the crux of the problem while Dr. North explained that it is the unwillingness of more and more individuals to take responsibility for their own health care that is contributing most to the skyrocketing health care costs. Both speakers were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their positions. Voting was a little lighter than normal due to the online voting system being down, but Dr. North ended up winning the e-mail vote 55% - 45%. Show Summary
The United States has the most expensive health care system in the world. Approximately 44 million people in this country have no health insurance, and another 38 million have inadequate health insurance. A Harvard University study found that 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings were partly the result of medical expenses. Why have healthcare costs become such a problem in the United States and what can be done to fix the problem? Does the solution lie with government taking a more active role or is there a way to promote market based solutions?
